My First Trip Abroad: A Day Trip from Bucharest to Rousse

Last Thursday I was thrilled to get my very first passport. Little did I know, my parents already had a surprise trip planned to use it!

I couldn’t wait to travel abroad. Then on Saturday morning, my parents surprised me by saying we were going somewhere.

I was intrigued when they mentioned a new museum. I asked if we could also go to a mall so I could look at computers – I’m hoping to upgrade from my laptop to a PC!

They said OK.

We didn’t leave super early in the morning – it was around 11:30 am when we got in the car and left Bucharest. I actually fell asleep in the car 🙂

My parents woke me up right before we got to the bridge crossing the Danube River into Bulgaria. They said we were going to pay the bridge fee (you need to pay the fee to cross the Danube Bridge which also marks the border between Romania and Bulgaria – you literally see the sign with the name of the country you are entering while you are on the bridge) and then visit a museum in a city we’ve never been to before.

After paying the bridge fee, we stopped at the border control where I got to show my new passport for the very first time! The officer just looked at it and handed it back.

It turned out we were heading to Rousse, Bulgaria for the day. My parents later told me it was their first visit too. They’ve been to Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria before, but never Rousse.

Our first stop in Rousse was the Regional History Museum. It was fascinating to explore the exhibits showcasing the long local history.

It was interesting – they also had some interactive pannels. They also had puzzles.

We saw tools from dating back to Stone Age, an exhibition dedicated to WWI, WWII, and more.

Before we went to the museum, we relaxed in a small park in front of it – as my dad went to withdraw some local currency (you cannot use the card to pay at the museum.)

It was a small park, but a nice one. Not many people at that hour – plus it was rather hot. There was a fountain in the park. We also look at the beautiful buildings in the area.

Next, as promised, we headed to the Mall Rousse. I checked out the electronics stores but didn’t end up getting a new computer, yet! Just window shopping for now.

I didn’t buy anything from the mall – except something to drink and a snack. But still, it was a nice experience.

The trip didn’t take long as we only had a museum on the list. My parents said they didn’t know what to expect at the museum, nor at the mall, so they didn’t plan more visits during this trip. But we will definitely come back to Rousse soon enough as we have 2 more museums in mind and other places to visit near by.

Crossing the border and showing my passport for the first time made this one of my most memorable trips yet. I can’t wait to use my passport again soon!
